Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What do JCL, GJCL, and NJCL stand for?

A: JCL stands for Junior Classical League, GJCL stands for Georgia Junior Classical League, and NJCL stands for National Junior Classical League.

Q: What does the JCL do?

A: Around Marist School, we regularly are hosting events where Marist students and students from other high schools can come together to learn about the classics.

Q: How do you get into LHS (Latin Honor Society)?

A: If you are a Marist student that has maintained a grade average above 90 for at least two years, you are inducted into the LHS. Being an LHS member gives you special privileges, such as being able to tutor younger Latin students and oversee the annual Latin Mass.

Q: When do students start taking Latin at Marist?

A: If the student started Marist as a 7th grader, then they will begin taking their level 1 language lesson in 8th grade. All 7th graders are required to take a one-term class called Fundamentals of Language (FOL) before starting language classes.

If the student entered Marist as a 9th grader, then they start their level 1 language lesson in 9th grade. Special arrangements can be made for students who have already taken a Latin class. To arrange for you or your student to skip a level of Latin, email mariert@marist.com or saundersa@marist.com.
